thoughts on photography

While driving to the bank this past Saturday, a small group of canadian geese sitting on an iced over pond caught my eye.  My first thought and reaction was to reach for my camera, pull over and take a photo.  I didn’t have my dear camera with me.
When something catches my eye, it generates a feeling and a response within me.  I want to capture that feeling in a photograph and convey and share that feeling with others. "this is me, this stirs me, do you feel what I feel?”
Photography has been in my life for a long time.  Years ago I took a photography class and learned how to develop photos in a darkroom.   Many times I went out with a camera in hand, looking forward to taking photographs.
I appreciate the freedom of digital photography.  If the photo doesn’t turn out the way I had hoped it would, I can delete it.  And it satisfies my need to create.  Editing the photos is the icing on the cake.
My initial response to the question – why do you photograph was “because I have to”.  But that’s not quite right.  But, I do have to be creative.  And photography fills that need quite nicely.
I went through my house and took photographs of some of the things that I’ve painted, sewn, refinished and made.

I think it’s an appropriate photo for this post.

  1. Finding your eye I see. That's wonderful. Enjoy your journey. Your "things" from around the house are so lovely and make a wonderful collage. I have recently noted that if my day does not afford creative time....I feel unbalnced and grouchy. We NEED it, don't we. Hope you have fun finding your eye

  5. I was interested to read what you said about photography and the need to be creative.

You have shown where you like to use all your creative energies and they make up a colourful mosaic with a homely, warm feeling.

  9. You are obviously talented in many areas your - love seeing the pictures of the 'things' you have made.
Isn't it annoying when you see something you want to take a picture of and not have your camera handy.

  11. I love how you pulled out the underlying need - to be creative - and acknowledged that photography is just one way to do that. Your collage of images is perfect to highlight that! I have also found photography a great creative outlet. Just the process of capturing the images can be enough. Thank you so much for sharing your journey!

  12. WOW -- you are incredibly talented! I have a need to be creative, but no talent in the areas of painting or sewing or sculpting. In the past I have allowed that creative side to come out in cooking and scrapbooking - but lately I desire to experiment in other areas, which is why I have decided to take up photography and writing. Perhaps I am a late bloomer "scanner" as you describe in your profile :)

  13. Yes photography is one of many ways to be creative. I like the assortment of things you've made and done - and the way the images are laid out here is balanced nicely as to color and form. Interesting concept of a "scanner" mentioned in your profile - I've always been a scanner, sometimes thought I should fault myself for it, but the truth is I like being this way. As I can tell you do too.
